A Wonderful Time

Oh how lucky I am!  I am in Chicago for the next week for the National Education Association Representative Assembly.  A while back I told my friend Audrey from Cute and Some that I would be in Chicago,  (her hometown) this summer.  Well, today Audrey came to my hotel to meet me.  It was so good to meet face to face.

Audrey took another friend and I to lunch.  It was such a fun place, called Heaven on Seven with fabulous Cajun food.    Here we are in the restaurant .   And here is another of the two of us with my friend Genie also from Alabama.

After lunch Audrey and I went to the John Hancock Building.  Wow! What amazing views of Chicago we saw.

There are so many great friends we all have out in the blogging world.  And today I met one of thesweetest and talented people ever.  I am so honored to know Audrey as a blogging friend and now as a true friend.  Today as a wonderful day.  I hope we get to see each other again before I go home.

 

Celebrate the 4th!!

The 4th of July is right around the corner, and oh what a fun time it is.  For 22 years I have been a delegate to the National Education Association's Representative Assembly.  This takes place each summer during the week of July 4th.  While we are very busy during the days inside the convention center, our nights are free.  And oh how fun it is to celebrate the 4th in a different city every year.  I have seen fireworks from coast to coast.  I have seen them from the water as well as from land.

Every fourth year our convention is in Washington DC.  That is my favorite place to celebrate the birth of our nation.  There on the mall, The National Symphony Orchestra, with a host of celebrities and dignitaries present a beautiful salute to our country.  It is fun to sit on the steps of the capital with a picnic meal and watch the performance and fireworks.  Last year, I watched the fireworks from the top of the Westin Hotel while eating dinner.  We were sitting next to the floor length windows that overlooked the Mississippi River.  There the fireworks are shot from barges on the river!  So much fun.

This year I will be watching the fireworks in the great city of Chicago.  I did this a few years back and it was a great show.  We watched them from the Navy Pier.  

This card is a gate fold card with the base measuring  8.5" x 4.25".  To hod the card together I used stars and stripes ribbon with a little label attached. 

 The label is cut from the LACEY LABELS  cartridge and the stamp is from Hampton Art.  I attached the stamp to the ribbon with foam tape.  

The banner is made with three different circle cuts from the ACCENTS ESSENTIALS cartridge.Now, take a look at the inside of the card.

I continued the use of the banner on the inside of the card.  The 4th of July cut is from the INDEPENDENCE DAY cartridge.  And the cuts on either side are from A CHILD'S YEAR.  The papers I used are from DCWV, The Paper Company, and AC  Specialities.  

Go see some fireworks and enjoy the 4th of July, no matter where you are.

A Get Well Card for a Sweet Baby Boy

Everyone at the Whimsical Wednesdays Challenge Blog is coming together to help brighten the spirits of a dear, much loved little boy.  His name is Angelo.  He has recently gone through brain surgery.  And, next week he will begin chemotherapy.  This is too much for anyone to contend with, much less a little toddler.
Angelo is the grandson of Margie, from   Bella Bug Creations.  You can read more about Angelo here.  We, the Design Team here are making cards for Angelo.  He is the card I have made.  I hope it will help bring a smile to his sweet little face at this difficult time.

I used decorative papers from DCWV and My Mind's Eye.  The solid colors are from The Paper Company.  This cute little raccoon is from the Camping Critters cartridge.  Isn't her just adorable.  Now to make the card fun for a little boy, I decided to make it a slider pop-up card.  There is a great tutorial on the Splitcoast Stampers website.  When you pull the tab of the card at the bottom, this is what you get.

Isn't this the cutest thing, the way the little raccoon on his bike is standing!!  I just love it.  It makes it look as if that little raccoon is about to ride right off the card. 

 And the other thing I like is that the sentiment is a little hidden surprise.  But, once the card is standing the sentiment is up front and in plain view.

I used the Paper Lace cartridge to cut the sentiment.  I just thought that the font was perfect for the card.

A Baby Shower

I have just finished addressing 58 invitations to a baby shower.  I do not know why I had the "bright idea" of making these invitations instead of just printing some.  But I can now say, "been there done that."  LOL
My dear friend who teaches in the classroom next to me is going to be a grandmother!  We have taught together for 25 years.  She is like family, so we want to have a really fun party for her and her sweet daughter.  It os a boy, so here is the invitation.

The nursery is being decorated with baby blue and brown.  It also has a transportation theme going on.  So this is what I came up with.  I really do not have many cartridges that have baby boy things to choose from. I decided to use the onsie in the center of the card.  I used a brown gel pen to add the snaps and stripes around the sleeves and neck.  I then added the little sailboat stamp for the decor.  I hope the new mom likes what I came up with.  The shower is in a couple of weeks.

Sunny Days

I just love the days of summer for many reasons.
1.  I am out of school.
2.  I get to go out for lunch.  It is much better than the school lunchroom.
3.  Time at the beach..
4.  Summer reading, sewing, and crafts..
5.  Eating fresh vegetables and fruit.
And the list goes on and on.  Here is my card about the LAZY HAZY CRAZY DAYS OF SUMMER.

This is a 6.5" x 5" card.  I cut the palm tree and bikinis from the LIFE'S A BEACH  cartridge.  The sun is from GYPSY WANDERINGS, and the Sunny Days is a cut from the Cricut Lite CELEBRATE WITH FLOURISH.  The grass at the bottom of the card is from the EASTER 2110 cartridge. 

The paper I used for the palm tree leaves is from K&Company.  All other paper is from The Colorbok.  I used a cute Peachy Keen Stamp face for the sun and added rosy cheeks with some chalk and used a white gel pen for the teeth.  I also used yellow and orange glitter glue to make the sun shine!  The bikinis are hanging from some tan and white twine.  

And the finishing touch is the three pair of flip flops from Jolee's Boutique.  This is such a happy card for a happy time of the year, SUMMER!

Lets Get Patriotic and Link Up the Love

As we walk through the stores we see all of the July 4th holiday decoration.  It is so much fun to look at the pretty things.  The other day I was in Hobby Lobby and right next to the July 4th isle were pumpkins, fall leaves and Halloween things.  Something is so wrong with this.  I do not understand why we cannot shop for one holiday at a time.  June is just not the time to be shopping for Halloween items.  At least it is not for me.

All of the paper I used for this card came from my scraps.  What a good use for them.  To make the red and white fan I cut 6 x 1.5 strips of each color.  I then cut them in half diagonally. Then I stacked them together.  To keep the papers fanned out evenly, I poked a hole in them and connected them with a brad.  After I got them glue to the card, I removed the brad and trimmed the (little tails) off of the bottom. Then I used a small plate to trace and cut a curved line at the top of the card. 

The blue border was created with an EK border punch. The ribbon helped to bring it all together.  The stamp is from the red,white and blue set by Pink By Design.  The entire set is wonderful.And of course, I added blue stars to bling it up!

Good News , Bad News

There is more good news than bad.  First, Ruby seems to be feeling much better.  She is moving about and runs to me when I call her.  But, she is so dirty.  The drops for her ears are thick and greasy.  And, of course, when I am putting them in her ears, she shakes her head.  So, not allmy drops make it into her ears.  The worse part is that due to her recent surgery, she can not have a bath.  I may just have to wash her face tomorrow.  Take a look.

I am not complaining because I am thrilled she is feeling better and her hair is growing.  After she gets her stitches out, she is going to the spa!!

Now here is my other good news.  I went to TJ Max today and found the best bargain ever!  I bought a pair of pants.  Take a look at the retail price and the price I paid for them.  YEA!!!!! 

Now, for the bad news.  My Mac Pro is very sick.  It may even be going to the laptop heaven.  Our school system provides all teachers with a Mac book.  Because I have some vision issues, they provide me with a Mac Pro 17".  It is like a part of my body so I am really missing it.  But Chris, the best tech guy in the world, called me and told me he had taken everything off of the Mac Pro and loaded them on a mac book for me to use for the next couple of weeks.  It will not be as easy to read, but I am not complaining.  He said that he had to check to see what would be more cost efficient, repair mine or purchase a new one.  I hope mine can be repaired.  I know they are not cheap, and that would be a lot of money to spend on me.  I'll know in a couple of weeks.  The good thing is the Mac book is certainly a lot lighter than the Pro.So when I am traveling next week, it will be great!! 

I have a 17" PC that I use for embroidering.  I pulled it out and am using it as I type.  But it is hard to go back toa PC after using a Mac.

My Sweet Ruby

The saga continues.  I was at a conference in Mobile last week.  During the time I was gone, Jack, Magnolia, and Ruby went to the vet to stay.  This is my first time to board my dogs.  They usually stay at my parents house, but I thought it might be too much for my parents right now.  My daddy is having good bit of inner ear trouble.  I didn't think he needed to be bending down to pick up a dog. 

Since they were staying at the vet, i asked if Ruby would be in a condition to be spayed and have a much needed dental treatment.  They said that tests show no signs of heart worms so she was good to go. 
Well, I got a call Friday morning from the vet.  She said that when they shaved Ruby for the surgery, there appeared to be some kind of small scar on her.  They could not determine what it was.  So they proceeded.  When they got her opened, they discovered she had been spayed as a young puppy.  Probably in a shelter type institution somewhere.  I just felt terrible that she had unnecessary surgery.  Because of the other scar, this one is higher and bigger than usual,so her recovery will be longer.  Poor Baby.  She seems to be doing okay in her recovery.  She is eating, and not scratching at the stitches.  She is taking her pain meds with no reaction.  So I guess all is good there.  At least her teeth got clean, which was badly needed.  The vet indicated that Ruby is probably three years old.  She still weighs three lbs.  Now that the heart worms are gone, she should gain weight.  Oh, and I forgot, she has an ear infection in both ears.  But we have meds for that.  I feel so bad for her and all that she has been through.  I am just glad that I have her and she will have a wonderful life now.  For she is very pampered and loved, just like Jack and Magnolia.
I am not even going to tell how much I have spent on vet bills in the last few months.

She would not look up at me.  I guess she did not want to be bothered.  I don't really blame her.  

A Sweet Blog Award

Well, I have just arrived home from my parents home and visiting with my sweet daddy.  How lucky am I to have such a wonderful father.  This year for part of his Father's Day gift included two things about the two things he loves.  I gave him a keepsake box.  It is a wooden box that is lined in felt and has the US Marine Corp emblem on the top.  He loved it as I knew he would.  I also gave him some crimson and white pasta in shapes of things about the University of Alabama football.  He loved it too and thought it was so funny.  He told my mom she needed to cook some of it this week. 

I just took a look at my blog and saw that sweet Tina, from http://myhoppyplace.blogspot.com/ sent me a new award.  And oh how yummy it looks!  Thanks Tina!!

Whimsical Wednesday Challenge #11

This week Whimsical Wednesday having a color challenge with the help of this photo.

The challenge is to use red and yellow, plus another color from the photo.  When making my project, I decided to use the aqua as my third color.  Take a look and tell me what you think.  

The patterned papers are from the Cosmo Cricket double stack "Material Girl" and Garden Variety".  The aqua paper is from The Paper Studio.  The mixer is a cut from the NIFTY FIFTIES cartridge.  I just love this cut because it reminds me of my mom.  She has one just like it, only white.  I remember the first time I use it, I attached the beaters backward.  Needless to say, when I tuned the mixer on, batter started flying everywhere.  I couldn't do anything but laugh.  Then I had a big mess to clean up. 

Ok, now back to the card.  I used a Martha Stewart border punch on the red and white paper.  The aqua Ric-Rac is left over from a sewing project.  And the little rhinestone flowers are some I won in a blog hop over at Mary's Cardz TV .  

The stamp is from Scrappy Moms Stamps.  And the little aqua rhinestones are from Recollections.  I really love the look of this retro looking paper with the cuts on the NIFTY FIFTIES cartridge.  They make a great pair.

An Oldie, But Goodie!

Like so many, I just love old movies, tv shows, and documentaries.  I would much rather watch them than anything new on television, and am  delighted there are networks dedicated to the "oldies".  Black and white beats color any day.  It is classic!!  And speaking of the classics...

Oh how fun this card has been to make.  The tv's cut is from NIFTY FIFTIES.  To make the card more interesting, I decided to put real classic shows on the screens.  Don't you think it gives the card a lot of character?  (no pun intended)  This I did by copying and printing the images from the Internet.  It was a hit and miss moment to get the images sized to fit the screen of the tv and yet be clear to see.  I then took the screen pattern I had cut out with the Cricut and drew around the images, and then cut them out.  I was so delighted with the outcome when I got them glue to the tv screens.  

Here is a close up of how it looks.

The glittered striped paper is from the DCWV All Dressed Up stack.  The black and white hounds tooth paper is from the DCWV Stripes and Plaids stack . The pink paper is Basil.  I wanted the sentiment to have the same retro feel as the rest of the card.  So, I created the sentiment on the computer with the Diner font.  

I used the same font for the sentiment on the inside of the card.

I know just who this card is going to, and can't wait for their birthday!

I just love the look you get when you take a plain piece of paper and run it through the Cuttlebug.  Oh, and I especially love it when you mix the paper colors and the embossing folders.

This is a 6x5" card.  The base is ivory.  I used a black pinstriped mat to help bring out the colors of the card.  The four colored stripes are from my scraps.  They are each embossed with a different folder. 

 The cream and black polka dot  paper is from the DCWV All Dressed Up stack.  I used a Martha Stewart border punch to cut the bottom of it.  All of the papers are inked with a Colorbox bronze ink pad.

A sheer tan ribbon with three blue rhinestones were added and then finished off with a flower from Recollections.  This can be a card for anyone on any occasion.

Vintage and French

Two of the things I just adore are antique/vintage and french.  I know that I sound like a broken record when I talk of my love for antiques and Country French style.  Well, here I am again speaking of the things I love.  There are a couple of challenges this week that have really sparked my interest because I get to use my favorite things in them.

The first one is the Simply Sunday Challenge at Getting Cricky.  The theme there is vintage appeal.  Oh, when I read what the theme was, I got excited, because I am all about that theme.  My problem this week has been having the time to get around to it.  The second challenge that caught my eye is over at Cooking With Cricut.  The theme there is "Pick Your Poison".  And you ask, "What is that?".  Well, it is using your favorite cartridge and favorite color.  So here is my card.

I just love this vintage style phone from the SUMMER IN PARIS cartridge.  It happens to be a cartridge that I just adore, because I love every cut on it!  I also enjoy using the FRENCH MANOR cartridge which has so many beautiful cuts on it.  But, my all time favorite is the SUMMER IN PARIS cartridge.  Each of the items of the cartridge has a base cut and one additional layer.  They all have a beautiful filigree look.  

And now for my favorite color.  It is french blue.  And I especially love it  when paired with a pale yellow.  So those are the central colors of my card.   I used paper from My Mind's Eye, The Laundry Line stack, for part of the base of the card.  All other papers are from Colorbok, The Flea Market line. I uesd the Tim Holtz paper distresser, (my favorite little gaget) and a gold Colorbox stamp around the edges of the papers.   The three printed borders to the left of the phone and above the ribbon are from K & Company.  The two ribbons I used on the card are from JoAnn's and the gathered lace is from my stash.  

The sweet embellishments I used are from the Colorbok  Flea Market line and Prima.  The sentiment in the top right corner, "a warm hello" is from the Scrappy Moms stamps.  

I am so glad I found the time to complete this card, because I love it!!!!

A Card for my Sweet Daddy

My daddy is 87 years old and is certainly the persona of THE GREATEST GENERATION.  After the attack on Pear; Harbor, he like many others lied about his age and joined the military.  My daddy at age 16,  standing 5'6", weighing 113 lbs, joined The United States Marine Corp.  He went to Camp Pendleton for his basic training, and was then off to war in The Pacific Theater.

After fighting on several of the islands in the Pacific, he was critically injured by mortar shell  on the island of Guam.  He was in a group of 10 in a foxhole.  Three survived and only one was not critically injured.    My daddy was hospitalized for over a year.  And a good portion of that time his parents knew of his injuries, but had no knowledge of where he was.  Hard to imagine.  

My daddy says the injuries he sustained on Guam saved his life.  From Guam, his unit then moved on to Iwo Jima.  As we all know, few survived there.  That is why he always says his life was saved on Guam.  

Other than God, and his family, the two things my dad loves the most are THE US MARINE CORP and Alabama football.  So here is my card for my daddy for Fathers Day.

My daddy drives a little red truck.  He says it is crimson,  like the Crimson Tide.  On the driver's door is an American flag.  On the back of the truck is the US Marine Corp Emblem and a bumper sticker that says Semper Fi.

  When I made the truck for this card, I did it on my Gypsy so I could weld two trucks together.  This I did to create a mini card for the front of the big card.   Here is the inside of the mini truck card.

The truck on the card is a cut from the NIFTY FIFTIES cartridge and the #1 Dad sentiment is from the WRAP IT UP cartridge.  Inside the mini truck card is the sentiment I love you from CRICUT CLASSIC FONT.

The It's your day! sentiment is also from the CRICUT CLASSIC FONT cartridge.  The other embellishments on the card I purchased at Hobby Lobby.  The blue pattern paper with stars is from a My Mind's Eye stack called Party Time.  All other papers are Basil cardstock.

CR84FN 31 Challenge

Here is the photo for inspiration.  Colors to be used are light pink, medium green and cream.  I love these colors.  They are so shabby pretty and sweet.

Here is my card.  I used cricut cartridges CAKE BASICS and ORNAMENTAL IRON.  The paper and embellishments are from K & Company.  This is just a sweet simple card that I will be able to use for most any occasion.

Bright and Sunny

Bright and sunny is what the weather is like here in Central Alabama. What I did not mention is that it is WAY TOO HOT!  I made this card as a representation of a bright and sunny day.

Isn't the paper just about the happiest paper you have seen!  It is from a My Mind's Eye stack called Summer Song.  I just love it.  All of the papers are glittered so they just have a beautiful sparkle to them. The scalloped circles are from the CELEBRATIONS cartridge.  That little sweet ladybug comes from the PAISLEY cartridge.   And I am just not sure where the leaves are from, because they are leftovers from a previous project.  The flower was cut from the MOTHER'S DAY BOUQUET cartridge.  The ribbon I used is a a fuchsia / orange ribbon I found at Michael's.  The little sentiment stamp is from Inkadinkado.    

Now, who will be the lucky person to receive this cute summer card?  It will be a surprise in someones mailbox very soon!!

Flag Day

On June 14th in the year 1777,  The Second Continental Congress adopted the flog of the United States of America.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared June 14th as Flag Day.  And then in August 1949, Congress made June 14th, National Flag Day, by Act of Congress.

As a classroom teacher I have the honor of saying the pledge to the flag each morning in my classroom.  And as a kindergarten teacher, I think it is important that I help the children in my class understand what the flag represents and what the pledge of allegiance means to us.  We also learn about the rules and how to care for the flag.

The card is made to honor our flag and all it represents.  The papers are from My Mind's Eye and Recollection.  The ribbon and Uncle Sam sticker are from Hobby Lobby.  I used a MS heart border punch at the bottom of the card.  The blue paper was embossed with  the Cuttlebug. The twine and sentiment stamp are from Pink By Design.  And the red button came from my button tin.  I finished off the card by using a Tim Holtz paper destresser on the upper right corner to help reveal the paper underneath.

Celebrations / Birthday Cake

A birthday card made with the CELEBRATIONS cartridge and paper from The Paper Studio's Birthday Extravaganza glitter stack.  This card is bright and happy!

To brighten it up even more, I added glitter glue to all the spots on the cake.  Gave the cake stand some rhinestone bling and tied a shiny purple bow on the top.  The stamp is from Inkadinkado. This photo does not do it justice.  It appears to be a bit dark.  I guess I should have waited to take the photo of the card in daylight.

Ruby, Two Weeks Later

The beginning of last week was a little rough.  My little Ruby became lethargic and was passing blood.  I went into panic mode and spent a lot more time and money at the vet.  Turns out, she had hookworms.  I could not believe that I am now dealing with heart worms and hookworms.  Neither of which I knew anything about.  I have never had a pet to experience either of these.  Ruby is a textbook case of what happens if you neglect to care for your pet.  

Well, that is all over now, because she gets tender loving care, as she should.  I think we have everything under control in regards to her health at the moment.  She is still on medication  and will be for a while. But she is doing great.  If all continues to go well, she will be spayed at the end of the month.  Keep your fingers crossed.  

He hair is growing and it is so soft and silky.  She just loves it when I com her hair.  I still think about the description I got of her from Laurie, at the shelter where she showed up as s stray.  "Matted to the bone and had to be shaved"   Well, as you can see, she looks better every day!!  And is still as quiet and polite as any dog I have ever known.  Oh, and Jack and Magnolia love her.
